For relieving structures in the fields of civil engineering, building construction or heavy machinery construction from large forces, the invention proposes an auxiliary element (6) which consists of a material, the strength of which is considerably altered by a change in temperature and which, moreover, exhibits a heating device, by means of which a uniformly distributed temperature change can be achieved in the auxiliary element. By putting the heating device into operation, the auxiliary element can thus be weakened, at any time, to such an extent that the structure is relieved of the forces.
