In the process a layer of mineral fibres (11) wetted with a binder is carried from a first conveying device (13) via a pre-press (19) to a more slowly running conveying device (17) in a through-type oven (35). During the conveying upstream of and in the through-type oven, the mineral fibre layer is compressed in its length and thickness. The fact that the mineral fibre layer, when entering the through-type oven (35), bulges out in alternate directions and is then compressed in its thickness means that mineral fibre slabs having flat surfaces and high compressive strength and tear strength transversely to the slab plane are produced. The mineral fibre slab is suitable in particular as roofing slab for insulating house roofs. <IMAGE>
