Powdered raw matl. is partly or wholly calcined before being passed through a rotary kiln. It is introduced into a multi-stage preheater, where it is heated by the hot exit gases from the kiln(1). Next the matl. passes to the last stage of the preheater where the gases are separated from it. The solid matl. is reintroduced into the kiln at the upper end but at a position downstream of its first intoduction. The material passes through the kiln for further heat treatment but is not entrained by hot gases.
