An apparatus for producing high purity nitrogen from air comprises a vessel (1) containing a bed (8) of molecular sieve adsorbent which preferentially adsorbs oxygen and carbon dioxide to provide a nitrogen rich gas stream and a layer of catalyst (12). In use a reducing gas, for example, hydrogen, is introduced into the vessel (1) and mixes with the nitrogen rich gas stream. The hydrogen and the nitrogen rich gas stream pass through the layer of catalyst (12) where substantially any remaining oxygen in the nitrogen rich gas stream is reduced to water/water vapour. <IMAGE> |
