PURPOSE:To prepare an alcohol and highly pure CO, in high yield, suppressing the formation of by-products, by thermally decomposing a formic acid ester at a comparatively low temperature in a liquid phase containing an amide or a nitrile. CONSTITUTION:An alcohol, e.g. methanol, and highly pure CO are prepared by thermally decomposing a formic acid ester HCOOR<1> (R<1> is 1-8C alkyl), e.g. methyl formate, in the liquid phase at 100-350 deg.C at the ordinary pressure to 150kg/cm<2>G for 0.2-5hr in the presence of (A) a monoamide I (R<2>-R<3> are H or R<1>; R<4>=R<1>) other than formamide and acetamide, e.g. N-methylformamide, or II (R<5> is H or R<1>; n is 1-2), e.g. N-butylpyrrolidone, and/or (B) an aliphatic nitrile R<6>-CN (R<6>=R<1>), e.g. acetonitrile. The amount of the amide or the nitrile is usually >=0.1mol, preferably 0.5-5mol on the basis of 1mol of the formic acid ester. |
