Carboxylate gps. present in alkali salts of aromatic carboxylic acids are rearranged by heating the salts, under CO2 pressure in an inert organic liquid diluent and in presence of a catalyst comprising an oxide of Zn, Cd, Hg, Pb or Fe and an aromatic caryboxylic acid. The process is partic. for the disproportionation of potassium benzoate into isophthalic acid (mainly) and tere- and orthophthalic acid, using pref. a mixt. of ZnO and benzoic acid as catalyst. Amt. of carbonaceous prods. arising from degradation of the catalyst is significantly reduced, so that the metal residue can be recycled several times directly after being isolated.
|
