A closure for stomas and incontinent natural bowel openings, at least in those parts which come directly into contact with bowel content, consists of a porous, flexible, hydrophobic material having a wetting angle of over 135 degrees relative to pure water and has an average pore size of less than 0.5 mm, preferably less than 0.2 mm. Sealing against exudation of fluid, semi- fluid and solid bowel content is hereby achieved, at the same time as there remains a satisfactory passage for bowel gases, thereby preventing the build-up of uncomfortable pressure within the bowel. In the pores, powder particles of, for example, active carbon can be present, for deodorizing the bowel gas. In order to form an especially effective seal against the bowel wall, in parts of the closure which are to bear against it a flexible, porous, hydrophobic material can be present. The flexible, porous, hydrophobic material can be a fibrous material of cohesive fibres, but is preferably an open-celled foam material, for example a silicone rubber.
