<p>PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound useful as a raw material for radical polymerization initiator and an intermediate for a chemical product, in a short time and high yield, by the reaction of diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide, etc., with a sulfite, in the presence of aqueous caustic soda in the reaction system. CONSTITUTION:Diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide and/or (2-hydroxy-2-propyl)cumene hydroperoxide is reacted with a sulfite, e.g. sodium sulfite, in the presence of aqueous caustic soda in a molar amount of 0.1-3 times, especially 0.3-1.5 times that of the raw material, to give di(2-hydroxy-2-propyl)benzene. EFFECT:The reaction proceeds at a very high reaction rate even at a low temperature, e.g. at 50 deg.C or below.</p> |
