Thermoplastic graft copolymers are prepd. from (a) a substrate copolymer (I) of >=2 monomers, >=1 of which has amino gp.-reactive positions present as an anhydride gp., a vicinal pair of COOH gps. and/or a COOH gp. adjacent to an alkoxycarbonyl gp. in which alkoxy gp. contains 20C, and >=1 of monomers contains no amino gp.-reactive positions, and (b) >=1 side-chain polymer (II), contg. per chain, a reactive prim. or sec. amino gp., while residue of (II) is unreactive with the reactive positions of (I), by heating 15 secs. to 60 mins., with mixing. (I) can be used as foils, tubes and pipes, e.g., tyre-tubes; for coating wire; for mfr. of conveyor belts, pressed boots and shoes, sealants, and can be spun to elastic filaments. Polyethylene oxide-contg. graft copolymers can be worked into a hydrocarbon polymer, e.g. polypropylene, to form antistatic polypropylene fibres. C2H4 graft copolymers can be mixed with low thermoplastic resins to form hot melt adhesives. Two or more types of side-chain polymer can be grafted to substrate copolymer.
|
