Short, blended rayon fibres contain 10-40% of Na carboxy-methylcellulose, based on the wt. of the cellulose, in which is not 3/4 of the COOH gps. are in the form of the Na salt. The fibres have a denier of 1.5-6, and carry 1% of a lubricant or protective coating. The fibres have a liq. retention capacity of is not 5.5 cc/g, determined by the Syngyna method. In partic., the rayon is a regenerated cellulose, and the length of the fibres is 19-127mm, e.g. 38mm. The fibres are partic. produced by adding the Na carboxymethyl-cellulose to a viscose soln., spinning the mixt., into a bath contg. H2SO4 (pref. 5.5-8%) and Na2SO4, drawing the fibres in a hot aq. medium, cutting the fibres, releasing the cut fibres in a hot water bath, weashing, and applying the coating from an aq. medium. The lubricant or protective coating is pref. water-sol. and in partic. a mono-es-ester of sorbitan and of non-ionic polyoxyethylene and a higher fatty acid; other lubricants may be used, e.g. soaps sulphonated oils, or ethoxylated fatty esters of polyhydric alcohols.
|
