The silencer body (10) of an automobile is connected to the exhaust pipe (12) by making a joint with the outlet pipe (11) which projects from the body of the silencer. The exhaust pipe (12) is fitted into the bore of the outlet pipe (11) and is held in place by forming two parallel grooves (14) on the outer surface of the outlet pipe, by an operation which simultaneously forms matching grooves (13) in the wall of the exhaust pipe (12). A split die (20, 21) with internal ridges (23, 24) is pressed against the outlet pipe (11) to form the grooves, (14).
