<p>Sub calibre ammunition for practice firing has a stem (2) with a pointed nose, with flights (4) at the rear, and enclosed by a cage (8) which transmits the forces of the ejection gases to the stem. The cage is screwed onto the threaded part (6) of the stem, and is made of prestressed glass which breaks into powdered fragments on impact. The cage has a hollow interior into which projects the nose (18) of a screw (14) mounted at the rear. The nose is attached by a narrow neck (16) so that it is detached on impact, to strike the glass part. An alternative design incorporates an explosive charge in the stem instead of using the impact nose. Another design is shell shaped, and encloses an impact nose as well as the stem.</p> |
