DRIVING METHOD FOR SOLID-STATE IMAGE PICKUP DEVICE

PURPOSE: To acquire image signals for j rows (j is an integer) for one vertical scanning period of TV signals without adoption of a high frequency for a horizontal transfer pulse by employing a horizontal CCD so as to mix signal charges of photoelectric conversion elements by j rows in the vertical direction in the drive method of a solid-state image pickup device. CONSTITUTION: In the solid-state image pickup device where m photoelectric conversion elements 1 are arranged in the vertical direction and n ones in the horizontal direction (m, n are integers) in a two-dimensional manner, a vertical transfer section 2 reads signal charges stored in the photoelectric conversion elements by a read pulse CH. Then the signal charges read by the vertical transfer section by j rows (j is an integer) are transferred to a horizontal transfer section for one horizontal blanking period based on a vertical transfer pulseϕV, the horizontal transfer section 3 mixes the charges and the mixed charges are transferred to an output amplifier section based on a horizontal transfer pulseϕH, and then the operation of completely transferring the signal charges of all the photoelectric conversion elements by m rows and n columns to the output amplifier section 4 is repeated j times for one period of one vertical scanning signal VD.
