The trailer has two axles (4,5). The steering axle (4) is subject to power steering by an hydraulic or pneumatic actuator (13). This axle can be mechanically locked (21) and unlocked by pressurised fluid controlling the actuator. Locking is obtained automatically in the case of a fall in pressure of the fluid below a threshold value. The power steering actuator body (15) encloses a piston fixed to an actuator rod (16) projecting from the ends (17,18) of the body. Mechanical locking is obtained by immobilising translation of the piston and more particularly of the rod relative to the actuator body. This immobiliser consists of a chuck, mounted on the actuator rod, which has jaws (16) encircling the rod. The chuck external perimeter is truncated so as to fit in a bore in a locking piston which is pushed above the jaws to cause their re-clamping on the rod by means of a return spring.
