The sail tightener has two hooks (13) which are connected to a yoke (15) and can be hung in locating openings (27) arranged on the sail (25). The sail (25) can be braced against a sail batten (31) by the tightening device (17) attached to the yoke (15). As a result, the sail batten (31) is pressed against the mast (33) and deflects to a greater or lesser degree in accordance with the applied tightening force. The curvature of the sail (25) can be set or changed individually by bracing several of such sail battens (31) let into the sail (25). This sail tightener permits uniform and firm tightening of a sail. Its use is especially advantageous in the sails of catamarans. <IMAGE>
