A process is described for obtaining, in yields of at least 94% and with a purity of not less than 98%, a 2-chloro-s-triazine which is substituted in at least one of the 4- and 6-positions by an amine group, by the known reaction of cyanuric chloride in an aqueous-organic medium with an amine in the presence of sodium hydroxide, wherein, however: - aqueous solutions of amine and of sodium hydroxide are simultaneously but separately added to a solution of cyanuric chloride in an organic solvent which is immiscible or only partially miscible with water and having a boiling point from 60 DEG to 130 DEG C; - the addition rate (in moles per unit time) of amine is 1.05 to 1.30 times that of the hydroxide until 1 to 2 mol of amine have been added for each mole of cyanuric chloride, whereupon the addition of only the sodium hydroxide solution is continued until a molar quantity equal to or slightly greater than the moles of amine fed is reached.
