PURPOSE:To use a specified styryl type dye as a photographic dye having superior stability on standing in an aqueous soln. and free from residual coloring after development. CONSTITUTION:A styryl type dye represented by general formula I [where R1 is alkoxy having one or more sulfo groups or a group of formula II (where each of R6 and R7 is lower alkyl yet at least one of them is sulfoalkyl); R2 is H or sulfoalkoxy; each of R3, R4 and R5 is H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, nitro, sulfo or carboxyl; and X is H or alkyl], e.g. the compound of formula III is used as a light absorbing dye for a silver halide photographic material. When the photographic emulsion layer is colored, the above-mentioned dye is preferably added in a concn. of about 1-3%. |
