This electrode is formed by a metal wire whose active surface is made up of a coating comprising at least 50% zinc. This coating facilitates the striking (initiating) of the discharges and especially forms a heat shield protecting the core of the wire against heating effects caused by the discharges. A machine for the machining comprises a tank (16) enabling zinc to be deposited electrolytically onto the wire (1). The latter then passes into a die (21) in order to be sized, before arriving in the machining zone (3) in order to cut the workpiece (2). <IMAGE>
