PURPOSE:To obtain efficinetly the title compound useful as an intermediate for pesticides, drugs, etc., by reacting a halosubstituted phenylacetonitrile with isopropyl halide in the presence of finely divided particles of an alkali hydroxide previously dispersed in an organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:A halosubstituted phenylacetonitrile is reacted with isopropyl halide in the presence of finely divided powder of an alkali hydroxide obtained by heating the solid alkali hydroxide in an organic solvent containing a compound, e.g., polyvinyl ether, ethylene glycol, etc. shown by the formula (R and R' are H or alkyl; X is O or S; m and n are integer not less than 1) under stirring, to give an alpha-isopropyl-halo-substituted phenylacetonitrile. The desired compound is obtained in high purity, in high yields, with a small amount of by-product. Since a nonproton polar solvent and a catalyst are not used, the recovery of the solvent and the treatment of waste water are carried out with ease and pollution is relieved. |
