Carbon- and nitrogen-contg. pollutants are removed from waste water by passing the water sequentially through 2 separate systems contg. different bacterial cultures. The first culture contains heterotrophic bacteria and is maintained under anoxic conditions to eliminate carbon pollution and cause denitrification. The second culture, under aerobic conditions, contains autotrophic bacteria and effects nitrification. The nitrified water is then recycled to the first stage for denitrification. Separate lines for recycle of sludges from each stage can be provided. An appts. for this process is also claimed. The system is esp. used to treat municipal waste water. By using 2 independent systems, competition between the bacterial is prevented. The size of the reactors can thus be reduced, and energy costs are lower with more efficient denitrification.
|
