Reciprocating internal combustion engine - has bevel gear drive between individual cylinder cranks and common main shaft

The engine has a cylinder block with cylinders arranged in a ring round it. A piston reciprocates in each cylinder. The piston has a connecting rod which joins it to a crank pin on a bevel gear held in the block. The bevel gear meshes with a second bevel gear which is fixed to the output shaft. This gear meshes with the bevel gears of all the cylinders. The shaft runs parallel to the cylinders through the centre of the cylinder block. It carries a valve disc at the top of the block which has ports controlling inlet and exhaust of the cylinders.
