<p>A gear cutting tool is provided with angular planar surfaces (28, 30) along its front face (13) for providing first (D, E) and second (F) side rake angles on the tool. The angular planar surfaces (28, 30) do not require resharpening when the tool is resharpened. The compound rake angles (D, E, F) which are provided comprise two or more planar surfaces (28, 30) formed along the length of the cutting face (13) of the tool, and these surfaces are related to one another in specific ways which provide for improved cutting action, better tool strength, and in some cases, better control of chip formation and removal. </p> |
