The multi-stage planetary gear transmission is particularly intended for operating a winch drum (4) which is secured (5) to the gear housing (1, 2, 3). It comprises, from input to output, sun wheels (9, 10, 11), planet wheels (15, 16, 17) on planet carriers (18, 19, 20), and ring wheels (21, 22, 3'). A non-rotatable coupling bush (28) is slidable to either engage (23, 27) with the last planet stage for slow wind, or disengage from that stage altogether to uncouple the drum. It can instead engage (31, 32) with the planet carrier (19) of the penultimate stage (10, 16, 22) for fast wind.
