<p>IMPROVED MOBILE SPREADER A mobile spreader of the type adapted to be attached behind a powered tractor in which material to be spread is placed in an elongated laterally extending hopper, having downwardly converging walls and a slotted opening at the bottom of the hopper. The amount of material which may be passed through this slotted opening is controlled by the disposition of a slider plate which may be moved below the slotted hopper opening closely adjacent thereto and set in a plurality of different positions with respect to said slotted opening. In one position a solid portion of said slider plate will completely cover the slotted opening so as to permit none of the material in the hopper to pass therethrough. By sliding the slider plate in one direction, as for example, forward, the solid area of the slider plate may be gradually drawn back off the slotted opening and, as the edge of the slider plate defining such solid area exposes more and more of the cross section of the slotted opening, material in the hopper may pass through the latter at a greater rate. At its extreme position, ¢in such direction, the slotted opening is completely uncovered to permit material to pass therethrough at the maximum rate. The slider plate, however, on the opposite side of its solid area from its defining edge may be provided with a plurality of orifices whereby, when the slider plate is moved back in the opposite direction from that which brings the edge of the plate across the slotted opening, the orifices in the slider plate may be brought under the slotted opening, thereby to permit preselected, more limited amounts of the material in the hopper to be passed through the slotted opening and the orifices. Additionally, in order to enable the spreader to distribute many different varieties of material ranging from free-flowing dry grass seed and sand to sticky, wet sand and soil, compost and peat moss, a pair of agitators are disposed transversely in the hopper in parallel with each other and parallel to the slotted opening in the hopper. The lower of said agitators functions primarily to force the material in the hopper toward the slotted opening, while the upper of said agitators functions principally to break up any bridging of material about the path of the first agitators. Additionally, the spreader may desirably carry adjustable means behind it to press and float an arcuate compacting plate or rake to work down into the turf material after it is dispensed down through the slotted opening in the hopper onto the turf or other surface over which the spreader is being pulled.</p> |
