Only heavy and/or large foreign bodies are to be kept away from the lye pump and be accumulated for the lifetime of a washing machine, without this entailing adverse effects on the operation or on parts of the washing machine. The interior of the separating container (7) is connected to an inflow connection piece (6) and to a run-off connection piece (10), connected to the suction side of the lye pump, in such a way that there remains underneath the lower edge of the inflow and run-off connection pieces (6, 10) a space provided for receiving the foreign bodies conventionally occurring during the average lifetime of washing machines and to be kept away from the lye pump and, above the lower edge of the run-off connection piece (10), a space provided for receiving at least some of the residual water flowing back from the run-off hose. In the interior between the inflow and run-off connection pieces (6, 10), a partition wall (14) is arranged, at least along some of their edge lengths, at a distance (17) from the side walls and cover walls of the separating container, in such a way that the gap cross-section thus formed for the passage of water is equal to or at most 3 times as large as the tier cross-section of the inflow and run-off connection piece respectively, and the distance (17) is smaller than the largest permissible dimension of a foreign body passing through the lye pump.
