The gulley grating (1) and frame (2) may be used to drain surface water from highways. The frame may be of U-section with the bar (9) cantilevering out externally (10), the inner leg being cut away to form vertical tongues (13) at regular intervals. The tongues are shorter than the outer legs (8), terminating in an arrowhead (12) or ratchet formation. The grating may take an inverted tray form with a doubled downstand (6,14) and T-section bars between water openings (3). Windows (15) are provided at intervals in the root of the inner downstand legs (14) and opening out (17) onto the top face (5). They are engaged by the ratchet heads to secure the assembly.
