The lift for helping a handicapped person into a car makes use of a special wheelchair which is made in two distinct parts. The chair comprises a wheeled chassis and a chair section which are separable. The chair section may be attached to a sliding mechanism extending from the side of a car. The mechanism includes two transverse rails - at the front and rear of the seat, and jacks for moving the chair and its occupant horizontally. Further jacks are provided to lift the chair to the same height as the car seat. An electric motor provides the pressure to operate the jacks and electric microswitches sense the position of the seat so that a control circuit may operate the mechanism in the appropriate sequence.
