A data storage unit is structured to allow a range of document formats to be established. The unit has a central processor operating with a format recording unit, display, keyboard and connection to a data bus coupled to memories and programme stores. The format entry unit contains a screen (FP) on which the document is laid. A number of entry points are provided for plug-in control modules (P1-Pn). The document information is illuminated by light emitting diodes to identify specific items. The location of specific format locations may be entered over the keyboard (KB).
