The DC motor is capable of working at great depths. The motor is an asynchronous squirrel cage type having continuously variable speed and is intended for use in propulsion systems and powering hydraulic systems etc. DC power (5) is brought in, normally from batteries, in deep sea environments via a conical seal into a cylindrical pressure vessel (8) having one hemispherical end. This encloses a small pilot motor (m) and carries two brushes (b) on its shaft. These feed a distributor (1) on the axis of the motor shaft. The distributor output is taken through the seal to the stator windings of the motor proper (M) working outside the pressure vessel in the surroundings. The distributor is built up in exactly the same way as the collector of a DC bipolar dynamo.
|
