Valve seat for IC engine - has ridge on back to form seal in V-groove at base of recess

The engine cylinder head (1) has an inlet passage (3) and an exhaust passage (4) with a bore (7) between them for an injector or sparking plug. Valve seats (6) are pressed into the open ends of the inlet and exhaust passages. The back of each valve seat has an annular ridge (8) round it. This presses into the cylinder head and forms a gas seal round the inlet or exhaust passage. The section (12) of the back of the seat outside the ridge is tight to the base of the recess in the head (1). The section (13) inside the ridge is tapered to give an annular gap of V section.
