The bar or plank stacking machine has arms on columns movable horizontally to and fro. A deposit surface is provided for a stack layer near the top of the columns and also a transporter mechanism. Lifting beams (8) are mounted on the columns (1) and form the deposit surface. They are movable between a level below that of the surfaces of the arms (10) and one above them. Beam length can be greater than the maximum width of stack layer and they can be movable by means of a parallelogram linkage (9).
