The line interface unit has the frequency of its clock generator derived from the frequency of the multiplexing system, the transmission frequency in the transmission cable being a multiple of this. The auxiliary channels are transmitted by multiple sampling or the auxiliary channels are controlled using a clock signal derived from the multiplexing frequency. The individual signals are grouped together by a multiplexer and sent together. The advantage lies in the simple and cheap manner in which one main signal and a few auxiliary signals are transmitted together.
