PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To permit an operator to detect an original without setting or density change information for detecting the original by recognizing the kind of a mounted original presser and selecting stored density information for detecting the original in accordance with the recognized kind of the original presser. SOLUTION: LUT 17 stores plural kinds of density information (threshold) for detecting the original, which correspond to the kinds of the original pressers, for example, with or without ADF. CPU fetches an original presser identifying signal in the case of supplying a power source, recognizes the kind of the actually mounted original presser, obtains the density information corresponding to the recognize original presser kind from LUT 17 and set it in an original detecting part 16. The part 16 detects the original through the use of the density information. Thus, density information for detecting the original is not required to be changed in setting even when the kind of the original presser is changed, for example, from without ADF into with ADF.
