<p>An ice fishing apparatus includes a fishing rod pivotally mounted on a stand for rotation about a horizontal axis, a reel for fishing line rotatably mounted at the handle end of the rod, one side of the reel being defined by a ratchet wheel, rotation of which is normally prevented by a catch; the catch extending upwardly through an elongated aperture in the rod and forwardly to the top end of a lever, which is wrapped around a pivot pin supporting the rod on the stand and which extends downwardly and forwardly, the catch and lever being biased forwardly by a spring to a position in which the catch engages the ratchet preventing rotation of the reel, whereby, when a fish strikes, the rod tilts forwardly pressing the lever against the upright of the stand which causes the catch to release the ratchet wheel, permitting rotation of the reel for winding or unwinding of line during playing or reeling in of the fish.</p> |
