The unit is used o reduce the level of toxic substances inhaled when smoking cigars and cigarettes. It comprises a rectangular body (20) having a spring loaded plunger (36, 44) moving in a recess (26) parallel to its longitudinal axis. The cigar or cigarette is passed through an aperture (22) in the lower part of the body and held. A cap (24) on top of the unit is pressed down, causing the point of the spring loaded plunger to pass into the aperture and pierce cigar or cigarette. This permits more air to be inhaled when smoking.
