A thread cutting machine comprises a cutting head having thread cutting jaws which are driven by a motor (2) via a reduction gearing. The motor (2) is housed in a casing (1) which is attached to the casing of the cutting head (5). The winding (8) of motor (2) comprises at least four part windings and a switch is provided whereby the motor (2) may be changed from two-pole to four-pole operation, thus providing two operational speeds of the motor (2) and hence the cutting jaws to cater for cutting threads on large or small diameter work-pieces.
