<p>In a process for digesting sludge from a biological waste water treatment plant, optimisation of the metabolic activities of the microorganisms involved in the reaction is achieved when some of the sludge is taken out of the reaction system (42, 43) by branching (21), partially dewatered with the aid of an artificial gravity field (22) and returned to the reaction system (23).
