By employing a bridge connected thyristor assembly (S) as the switch controlling the capacitor current the additional inductance necessary to limit transient and fault current can be placed on the d.c. side of the bridge. Here the choke (1d) has no detrimental effect on the degree of compensation achieved by the capacitors. The arrangement can also be used to control harmonic filters (F). The filters are tuned exactly to the required harmonic, the choke (Ld) on the DC side having very much less effect than a current limiting choke in the AC lines.
