In the method, steel is poured into the mould through a bottom outlet of a casting vessel (1) in a first stream (5) with a low flow rate until a liquid metal level is reached at which a connection is formed between the solidifying steel and the dummy bar head (4), whereupon this stream (5) is interrupted, the withdrawal process is begun and the steel is poured into the mould in a second stream (5') with a higher flow rate. This allows the steel in the region of the dummy bar head (4) to solidify to a sufficient extent before the strand is withdrawn at high speed. The risk of start-up break-outs, especially with small sizes, can be reduced. <IMAGE>
