The pressure-operated actuating ram is for a friction clutch, having two friction plates rotating with one shaft and thrust axially in opposite directions against spring action against inner mating faces in a clutch housing fixed to the other shaft. One plate is secured to the ram piston and the other to the cylinder. The cylinder (5) and piston (6) of the ram are mounted outside the clutch on a stationary bearing bracket (1, 2, 3) enclosing and clear of one of the shafts (16), and so that they can slide axially but not rotate. Each is fixed to the inner race (10a, 11a) of a roller thrust-and radial-load bearing (10, 11). The outer races (10b, 11b) of the latter each have an annular support for pull-and-thrust rods (14, 15) spaced round the periphery and extending axially, and coupled alternately to the plates.
