The beet harvester is towed by a tractor (3) and has its shaft (14) drive automatically disconnected when the tractor stops. The drive starts again automatically when the tractor starts to move. The drive for harvester shaft consists of a hydraulic motor (16) driven by a hydraulic pump (19). A hydraulic valve (20) between the pump and motor shuts off the oil supply, when the tractor stops moving. The valve is of electromagnetic type and operated by a device that measures changes in relative distances between the tractor and harvester so that, when the harvester approaches the tractor to within a given distance, the valve closes.
