The solid substances used consist of amorphous metals which are also known as metallic glasses, and they include metastable microcrystalline metals and alloys. A melt of suitable (but unspecified) compsn., which has an exponential solubility for gas, is quenched by being brought into contact with a cold substrate so a cooling speed of ca. 10 degrees K. per second is achieved to solidify the melt. The low packing density of the amorphous metals or alloys permits much higher storage of H2 than conventional metals currently being used for this purpose.
|
