The combustion engine comprises hanging inlet and exhaust valves to connect the respective ducts (18, 19) with the combustion chamber. At t.d.c. the space is largely formed by a circular-section recess (4) in the top (9) of the piston (1). Around this recess, the piston top is provided with a number of contoured ribs whose sides (7, 8) between them define passageways (5). These converge towards the recess such that the inlet flow through them enters the recess tangentially. The bottom (9) of each passageway may be downwardly inclined from the outer periphery (6) of the piston to a deepest point at the entry (10) to the recess (4).
