Polymeric soluble hydrogenation catalysts (I) contain Gp. 8 metal (salt) (II) combined covalently and/or coordinated with soluble (semi)synthetic polymers (III). (I) are specifically for use in soln. of suspension in the hydrogenation of organic cpds., in soln. in organic solvents or water at low or high temp., normal or elevated pressure, either directly or after sepn. of low-mol. starting materials and reaction prods., esp. by membrane filtration. In particular, (I) are used in the hydrogenation of nitro(so) cpds. to amines, (un)substd. alkynes to alkenes and alkanes, (un)substd. cyclolefins or aromatics to cycloaliphatics, hydrogenolysis of ethers and esters, selective hydrogenation of alkynes to cis- or trans-alkenes and selective hydrogenation of one or more double bonds in polyolefins or polyunsatd. acids, alcohols, ketones and fats.
