PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chelate-forming oligomer which can stably catch metal ions for a long period, and to provide a coating composition containing the same. SOLUTION: This chelate-forming oligomer comprises one or more oligomers selected from (I) an oligomer having ethylenic unsaturated groups and prepared by copolymerizing (i) an ethylenic unsaturated monomer by a catalytic chain transfer polymerization method and (II) a cooligomer prepared by copolymerizing (ii) an ethylenic unsaturated monomer in the presence of (I) the oligomer, is characterized in that (I) the oligomer and (II) the cooligomer have at least two chelate-forming groups (for example, acetoxy groups) in one molecule. The chelate-forming oligomer wherein (i) the ethylenic unsaturated monomer and/or (ii) the ethylenic unsaturated monomer contain 2-(acetoxy)ethyl methacrylate. The chelate-forming oligomer wherein (i) the ethylenic unsaturated monomer and/or (ii) the ethylenic unsaturated monomer contain a hydroxyl group-containing unsaturated monomer and diketene is added to the hydroxyl groups in (I) the oligomer or (II) the cooligomer.
