PURPOSE:To prevent the failure of a bare optical fiber by disposing a sensor which detects the retreat position of a ferrule chuck to the prescribed point behind the ferrule chuck. CONSTITUTION:The limit switch 5 sensor is disposed on a base plate behind the ferrule chuck 3 and further, a stopper 6 is disposed behind the same. The bare optical fiber 1 is inserted into a small-diameter hole 30 of a ferrule 2. The bare optical fiber 1 is forced into said hole while the fiber 1 is kept rotated when the front end of the fiber 1 abuts against the inlet wall 20 of the small- diameter hole; therefore, the ferrule chuck 3 is retreated to trip the limit switch 5. The retreat position is thus detected. The forcing in of the fiber 1 is ceased when the retreat position is detected. The state before the forcing in of the fiber 1 is then restored and the insertion operation is repeated. The forcing in of the fiber into the ferrule beyond the retreat position is thereby prevented and the bare optical fiber is easily inserted with the ferrule without breaking the fiber. |
