The control system has the inlet hole of the outflow line (43) controlled by the member (39) separating a first pressure chamber (37) from a second pressure chamber (38) such that as the pressure drop increases the cross sectional area of the hole is also reduced. The two chambers belong to a throttle valve. A fuel metering device (7) coupled to the setting element of a setting motor (9) moves in the direction of smallest fuel quantity when the setting element is displaced under the action of its restoring force. The setting element is therefore set such that the exhaust gas return line is closed in one type of control and the fuel-quantity controller is set to zero quantity in the other type of control.
