The spreader comprises a frame adapted to be brought by a handling machine first to a position in which it is located partly above and is urged laterally against at least one part of the container acting as a locating element for the frame and finally to a position of coincidence with the container in plan. At least two arms are carried by the frame and are spaced apart laterally of the frame and extend downwardly from the frame when the spreader is in use and engage said locating element. A flexible and elongated guiding element interconnects the two arms and is adapted first to cooperate with said locating element so as to guide the frame toward said position of coincidence.
