The engine cylinder has a valve (5) which closes over the combustion chamber (1) and is operated by the cam (8). The space above the valve is connected to the inlet manifold (11) and the exhaust manifold (12). The space is fed through secondary inlet and exhaust valves (19,20). The valves are cam operated and are synchronised with the cylinder valve (5). The areas are the same as the area of the cylinder valve head, and this area is large compared to the cylinder diameter.
