The adhesive applicator is intended e.g. for a labelling machine. It comprises an applicator cylinder (6) which rotates about a vertical axis and receives adhesive from a container (7). The supply of adhesive to the container is controlled in accordance with the demand. A sensor (8) in the container responds to the presence of adhesive as it rises along the outer surface of the cylinder and is connected (9) to a controller (10) activating the supply mechanism (4, 5). The supply mechanism may comprise a pneumatic cylinder (4) actuating a slide valve (5). The sensor may be a proximity switch.
